Impressionisms Routes
Published in September 2016 by Editions ‘Les Itinéraires’, this book is the main written support for the European Cultural Itinerary programme ‘Impressionisms Routes’ supported by EAU ET LUMIERE with the Council of Europe. Its aim is to show the importance of the Impressionist movement in Europe, to describe the many exchanges that have taken place between European artists since the middle of the 19th century
and to present the first twelve routes created by Eau et Lumière, which make up the network set up by the Association as part of the ‘Impressionism Routes’ project, for which we are applying for the ‘Council of Europe Cultural Route’ label.
This book is in two parts, linked by an original Map of the Impressionist Movement in Europe, produced for the occasion.
It is published in the two official languages of the Council of Europe: French and English. It has 128 pages and numerous illustrations. The main text describing the Impressionist Movement in Europe was written by Monique LUCENET, Professeur Agrégé, Docteur en Histoire (Université Paris IV-Sorbonne) and author of numerous works on Impressionism. The Grande Jatte, Belle Isle in the Seine
The Ile de la Grande Jatte is the nearest Impressionist island to Paris.
Facing La Défense, in the communes of Levallois and Neuilly-sur-Seine, it was historically a cradle of artistic creativity, with Georges Seurat’s famous painting ‘Un Dimanche après-midi à la Grande Jatte’, the origin of the Pointillist movement.
It was also a source of inspiration for some of the world’s greatest painters, including Monet, Sisley, Signac, Van Gogh, Angrand, Bonnard and Gleizes.
It was also the birthplace of the industrial transformations of the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly in the fields of aviation and the motor car.
Like all the islands along the Seine, it was and remains a favourite spot for guinguettes and waterside pleasures…
Numerous illustrations.
