INFOFLASH N°102 – Exhibition: Edmond Verstraeten, Flemish Luminism in the Spotlight

Barbizon, Espace Museal l’Esquisse, April 2, 2026–September 28, 2026

In cooperation with the Association of Friends of Edmond Verstraeten (1870-1956), a world-renowned Belgian Impressionist artist, the Impressionisms Routes© network is organizing an exhibition dedicated exclusively to the “Master of Sombeke” from April 2 to September 28, 2026, at the Espace l’Esquisse in Barbizon, France.

Belgian Luminism is an original adaptation of the French Impressionist concept. It celebrates the clearest emanations of light and the search for pictorial effects capable of reproducing them. In 1904, most of the Belgian Impressionists presented themselves under the new banner of the “Life and Light” Association, led by Emile Claus. The most active Luminist center was then located in East Flanders, in the Ghent region, and in the Lys Valley, where Jean Delvin, Léon de Smet, and Edmond Verstraeten distinguished themselves through the quality and variety of their works.

Edmond Verstraeten, the “Flemish Monet,” born in 1870, is also known as the “Master of Sombeke,” where he lived on his estate in perfect harmony with nature. Impressionisms Routes© already paid tribute to him with its highly successful exhibition “The Routes of Impressionism in Europe” at Blauewendaal Castle in Waasmunster, Belgium, from March 12 to 26, 2023.

The Schwaan Museum (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany) hosted numerous works by Edmond Verstraeten from April 1 to June 17, 2023, under the auspices of Impressionisms Routes©. The exhibition presented in Domburg, Netherlands, in 2024 also attracted several thousand visitors.
