INFOFLASH N° 92 – EXIBITION: THE WORLD IN COLORS. SLOVENIAN PAINTING 1848–1918

Belvedere Palace, Vienna, January 30- May 26, 2025


The National Gallery in Ljubljana (Slovenia) and the Belvedere Museum in Vienna jointly present the major works of Slovenian painting from the far-reaching year of the revolutions in 1848 to the desintegration of he common Austro-Hungarian state in 1918.

The exibition will focus on the Slovenian Impressionists, their predecessors and followers thematically present the artistic characteristics of creation of Slovenian painting, whose specific combination of decorative effect, symbolism and technical approaches presented at the exibition will occupy a unique place in European painting.


The selection of artworks will be presented from the perspective of artictic analysis and stylistic similarities among artists, links between Slovenian artists themselves, their parallels with Slovenian and European literati and others, particularly Austrian artistic circles, also from the perspective of Viennise institutions and personalities.

Most of the artists presented spent at least some time in and around Vienna, as well as in Graz. Works of Jožef Tominc, Ivana Kobilca, Ferdo Vesel, Rihard Jakopič, Ivan Grohar, Matija Jama, Matej Sternen, Avgust Berthold and others will be placed alongside international masters such as Grohar’s mentor Giovanni Segantini, Tina Blau from Vienna, the Maribor born Anton Nowak and Ernst Stoehr, who lived in Bohinj.
