INFOFLASH 96 LIGHT, SPACE AND HARMONY THE ARTIST JOZEF POSENAER (1876-1935) May 26 – October 5, 2025 Domburg, Netherlands

As early as the 1870s, the elegant seaside resort of Domburg on the Walcheren peninsula in Zeeland was frequented by the Belgians Emile Claus, Camille van Camp and Euphrosine Beernaert, but it was Jan Toorop who made Domburg a real artists’ colony. Strongly influenced by the theories of Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, he himself influenced Piet Mondrian who came there for the first time in 1908, and returned several times until 1916, because this place inspired him enormously… Toorop and Mondrian became the leaders of Dutch Luminism, which reached its peak around the years 1908-1911.

The Marie Tak van Poortvliet Museum in Domburg has been an active member of the Impressionisms Routes® and euroart networks for a long time. In 2014, he organized an exhibition around the four Belgian artists who fled the violence of war in their country and found a temporary homeland in Domburg and its surroundings. Jozef Posenaer was one of them. To commemorate the ninetieth anniversary of his death, the museum will present a special exhibition on his life and work this summer, from May 26 to October 5, 2025. Jozef Posenaer, somewhat withdrawn, painted many calm and “atmospheric” sites during his stay in Domburg. We have the impression that he felt safe in Zeeland. His family was warmly welcomed and was part of the local community for several years. Friendly contacts still exist today, a century later.

The exhibition presents around forty works, most of them from Domburg and its surroundings. Each one tells a story and evokes an episode in the history of Walcheren. The Zeeland works are accompanied by a few paintings from Antwerp, Amsterdam and Brabant. Posenaer was a craftsman. His works are balanced in their composition and have a calm, often peaceful, and traditional appearance. The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication of the same name, No. 1. 5 of the “ICEAC Notebook” series.
