Armenian Impressionism – An original publication published in 2025 by the National Gallery of Yerevan
The Impressionist movement played a significant role in the history of European art. Armenian Impressionism, which emerged in the second half of the 19th century, flourished in the 1900s and 1910s, in harmony with other European countries, particularly France.
The exhibition organized by Impressionisms Routes®, a Cultural Route of the Council of Europe, at the Museum l’Esquisse in Barbizon, from June 27 to November 2, 2025, aimed to present artists and works little known in France to the general public, for the first time. Its creation required close cooperation between our international network and the National Gallery of Armenia in Yerevan. It benefited from the full support of the Armenian and French Ministries of Culture, to whom we extend our sincere thanks.
This exhibition, a first in Western Europe, provided an excellent opportunity for the publication of an original and artistically significant work (in English and Armenian) dedicated to the leading artists of the Armenian Impressionist School. Our network is very proud to be associated with this publication.
The National Gallery of Armenia has been a member of the Impressionisms Routes® network since 2023. This publication, like the exhibition presented in Barbizon during 2025, concretely demonstrates that culture can actively contribute to bringing people together.
Impressionisms Routes® is the Official Cultural Route of the Council of Europe, whose objective is to connect and promote significant sites related to 19th and 20th-century Impressionist and landscape painting in Europe. This network brings together the places where artists lived, the locations that inspired them, the artists’ colonies in which they participated, and the museums where their works are exhibited.
The activities of this network aim to highlight the universal character of Impressionism and the important role it plays in the understanding and preservation of European heritage.
