INFOFLASH N° 61 – RENOIR’S EXHIBITION in GUERNESEY

In September 1883, Pierre-Auguste Renoir stayed for a little over a month in Guernsey. He painted around fifteen paintings as it chosen bay, on the island’s south clifts, Moulin Huet. He was accompanied by friends including the journalist Paul Lhote and, likely, his partner and model Aline Charigot.
Having first explored Jersey, his ultimate goal was the rock of Guernsey “on which Victor Hugo cried out for eighteen years”. Renoir’s voyage marked a pivotal period for his art: “ In around 1883, there was a break in my work. I had gone as far as I could with Impressionism and I had reached the conclusion that I did not know how to paint or draw” he wrote!
